Il progetto è il frutto di un’analisi relativa allo sviluppo urbano degli ultimi anni, dei limiti strutturali di un territorio disomogeneo, che non può essere percepito in modo unitario, ma come somma di elementi territoriali distinti; ma anche delle potenzialità sociali e culturali che vi circolano e che hanno generato sempre di più la necessità di individuare e promuovere un nuovo modello di sviluppo urbano, in grado di soddisfare delle precise esigenze qualitative, rafforzare le caratteristiche attrattive del Comune e ricercare la sua moderna identità “rurale”.

Capannori costituisce l’insediamento più vasto della Provincia di Lucca, ed in esso si concentra più della metà della popolazione. La Piana di Lucca è fortemente connotata dal rapporto che esiste fra la città ed il suo contorno: il masterplan è stato concepito con la finalità di costituire una nuova forma del territorio ed uno spazio pubblico in grado di includere-coinvolgere i cittadini come protagonisti della città stessa e come destinatari unici degli interventi di rigenerazione. Disegnare un processo di cambiamento per il Comune di Capannori, infatti, significa prima di tutto realizzare uno spazio in grado di creare comunità ed aggregazione.

Elemento fondante del progetto è il parco agricolo urbano che rappresenta una cerniera fra il territorio urbanizzato e rurale, stabilisce un vero legame e non segna solo un confine. In questo senso non rappresenta un luogo da frequentare solo occasionalmente o destinato ad essere solo di passaggio.

Il raggiungimento degli obiettivi di qualità urbana, sociale, culturale, ambientale, paesaggistica, economica ed energetica rappresentano il riferimento ultimo del progetto masteplan.

The project is the result of an analysis of urban development in recent years, of the structural limitations of an inhomogeneous territory, which cannot be perceived in a unitary way, but as the sum of distinct territorial elements; but also the social and cultural potentials that circulate there and which have increasingly generated the need to identify and promote a new model of urban development, able to meet specific quality requirements, reinforce the characteristics of the Municipality and seek its modern "rural" identity.

Capannori is the largest settlement in the Province of Lucca, and more than half of the population is concentrated in it. La Piana di Lucca is strongly characterized by the relationship that exists between the city and its surroundings: the master plan was conceived with the aim of creating a new form of the territory and a public space able to include citizens as protagonists of the city itself and as unique recipients of regeneration interventions. Designing a process of change for the Municipality of Capannori, in fact, means, first of all, to build a space able to create community and aggregation.

The cornerstone of the project is the urban agricultural park that represents a link between the urbanized and rural territory, establishes a real bond and does not only mark a border. In this sense, it does not represent a place to be visited only occasionally or intended to be just passing through.

The achievement of the objectives of urban, social, cultural, environmental, landscape, economic and energy quality represent the ultimate reference of the masteplan project.
